Yes, constipation can be common in pregnancy. The hormonal and anatomic changes during pregnancy can slow down the digestive system. Eating more foods with fiber and increasing water intake can help fight constipation. Fiber is found in fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds, nuts and whole grains. Exercise can also improve bowel function! If those measures don’t work, over the counter stool softeners and laxatives can also be helpful for symptoms of constipation during pregnancy.
