In the United States, the D.O. and the M.D. are the only two degrees permitting licensure as medical physicians. D.O and M.D. physicians have similar training, both requiring four years of medical school training in the basic and clinical sciences and the successful completion of licensing exams. Holders of a D.O. degree have additional training in osteopathic manipulative medicine techniques. This is a form of therapy that uses physical contact, used to improve the impaired function of the musculoskeletal system and is a form of complementary medicine.
